Stephen F Austin State

Founded as a teachers' college in 1923 as a result of legislation authored by State Senator Wilfred Roy Cousins Sr., the university was subsequently renamed after one of Texas's founding fathers, Stephen F. Austin. Stephen F. Austin is one of four independent public universities in Texas (i.e., those not affiliated with one of Texas's six university systems).

Stephen F. Austin State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Though the university is located in the rural East Texas college town of Nacogdoches, the vast majority of SFA students come from Greater Houston, the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, and other cities throughout Texas. 

Stephen F Austin State's total enrollment in 2020 was almost 13,000 students. The campus enrollment is rapidly growing to meet the demand of new students in the future.

The City

 

Nacogdoches County (pop. approx. 65,466) is located deep in Texas Forest Country. Nacogdoches (pop. approx. 33,405), the largest city in the county, is the home of Stephen F. Austin State University. Two historic milestones were celebrated in September 2018 at Stephen F. Austin State University. In addition to the 95th anniversary since its founding in 1923, the university has marked its first enrollment of more than 13,000 students.

Primary industries are education, agriculture (poultry, timber, cattle, grain and dairy products), manufacturing (feed & fertilizer, valves, business forms, transformers, motor homes, poultry processing and sealing components), oil & gas and tourism.

Student Housing

More than 13,000 students study at Stephen F Austin State University. representing 46 states, the District of Columbia and approximately 89 foreign countries. The university clubs and organizations provide each student with an opportunity to become engaged with an organization that shares his or her interests. SFAS University has a total undergraduate enrollment of 11,164, with a gender distribution of 42 percent male students and 58 percent female students. At SFAS, 36 percent of students live in college-owned, -operated, or -affiliated housing and 64 percent of students live off campus.
